After his bath, Jason assigned Mara to stay up the first half of the night as a guard, and Dasha the second half.

“Whatever you do, don’t let the guests know why you’re on guard. You can tell them you’re doing extra work, or you can’t sleep, or anything else you like, but we don’t want them to panic. That’ll just be counter-productive.”

“Do you really think Melethar might attack us here?” Mara asked, her eyes wide. While she hadn’t faced Melethar’s men at their fort, she had been with Jason when they’d rescued the girl they found in the woods not long ago, and she’d seen the strange tunnels for herself.

“It’s a definite possibility. But it’s not something we need to be worried about, so long as we take precautions.”

Dasha nodded grimly.

“One thing we can take solace in is that Melethar’s bucks are not quiet. If they start coming out of the ground like bugs, they’ll announce themselves.”

“I hope so. I just hope we’ll have enough time to react,” Jason said. He kissed Mara good night, and then he and Dasha went up to bed with the others. Jason debated telling them about his suspicion that the bone goblin was watching over them, but he knew that other goblins didn’t trust bone goblins.

From what Jason understood, bone goblins were goblins who’d lost their minds, and retreated into the woods, wearing complex outfits consisting of the bones of other goblins. The girls were divided as to whether or not bone goblins only ate other goblins or if they ate other things as well, but preferred goblin meat. Nonetheless, the fact that the only bone goblin any of them had encountered had been living in secret near a large encampment of goblins made either option possible.

Jason also wondered if this meant that the bone goblin had been feeding Estrella goblin meat. He didn’t dare bring it up—the subject of cannibalism was an understandably touchy one, especially considering Kleya’s heightened fears about being eaten now that hot baths were a daily part of her life.

That night, he attempted to sleep, but found himself tossing and turning, thinking over the situation. Even availing himself of the girls didn’t put him to sleep as it usually did, though the slick naked goblin girl flesh managed to distract him for an hour or so before the girls drifted off to sleep and he found himself ruminating on the situation once more.

He did have one major advantage, he decided.

If Melethar’s goblins were indeed tunneling towards the Thirsty Goblin, then Jason knew where they would be, eventually. That would let him set up traps and maybe even an ambush. And if Alder had something like a map of tunnels beneath Klarrandar, then maybe they’d even be able to go on the offensive and strike Melethar and his bastard goblins before they made it close to the Thirsty Goblin.

Around two in the morning, Mara came into the bedroom and roused Dasha. She climbed atop Jason, and when she was finished, stayed in the spot where she’d put herself, snoring softly against his chest.
