TEXTURES

Adding pleasant textures to your space is a great way to immediately amp up the coziness. Especially if you have a lot of specific sensory preferences and aversions, spending time thinking about the textures of your space can make your life significantly more enjoyable in the long run. Try walking around your apartment and touching all your blankets, sheets, rugs, and towels. Do you love the feeling of any of them? Do you hate the feeling of others? Take some notes about which fabrics you prefer and which you find unpalatable.

If there are certain items that you can’t stand the texture of, then get rid of them! Maybe you can host a goblin blanket swap or just donate them to a thrift store. There’s no reason to keep something that’s making you actively uncomfortable. If there are items that have really great textures, try keeping them more readily available. If you have a throw blanket that you love but it’s always buried under your bed, try keeping it on your bed or sofa instead. Always keep your comfort accessible.

Although we spend a lot of time thinking about what textures our hands like, it’s also worth thinking about which textures other parts of our bodies like. For example, if you hate getting out of bed and stepping onto the cold floor, maybe find a rug or bath mat or even a pair of slippers to keep next to your bed. If your back gets sore sitting in your work chair, try adding some pillows that offer back support. If you wash your face with a washcloth that feels too rough, swap it out for something softer. Prioritizing your comfort means taking a minute or two to make yourself feel better in any given situation and especially in your own home.
