DEDDY AND COOKIE TOOK TURNS WATCHING the farmhouse that weekend. Not counting a quick trip to check on Pearl each day, Big John spent every second prowling from Shine’s bed to the den.

On Sunday night, Deddy came home with a grim look in his eyes. Grim even for the man who frowned at good news. I wanted to ask but couldn’t. Momma asked every question except the question.

When she finally asked if Shine had much longer, he glanced from one kitchen cabinet to another as if wondering whether Momma had found every bottle he’d stashed through the years. He shook his head and left.

Momma reached out and brought me in for a long hug. “Are you okay, Slide?”

I kept staring at patches of vinyl on the kitchen floor, wishing I’d followed Deddy through the door and headed for my room. A boy my age wasn’t supposed to cry in front of his momma. But it was too late.
