BARNABAS

After Sullivan thoroughly humiliated me in front of the one person in my life I'm actually starting to like, I was pretty fucking sure the rest of the day was doomed to be just as bad, if not worse—but so far, I've been lucky. Dimitri wasn't in biology class today, which is a little weird, but I like the sub, so it worked out. Interestingly, Laney seemed surprised he wasn't there, too. Maybe he's planning something.

Then again, I know I've always been a bit paranoid. I have my reasons, of course. The Order of Auryx is nothing to scoff at, and I still have virtually no idea who is part of the Order and who is innocent, other than knowing Laney Cook—and her small but powerful family—is an obvious shoe-in.

Not that it matters. It's not illegal to be part of a cult, so what the hell am I supposed to do about it, anyway? Prove somehow that they wiped out the rest of the Hawthornes? I'm still not sure why I was spared unless the Order has some kind of weird rule about hurting kids, and knowing the other shit they've done, I doubt that's the case.

At least I'm not alone now. Beatrice is cranky, to say the least, but at least she's an ally. Sort of. For now. I keep reminding myself she's only holding back from attempting to kill me again because she needs me. It's not because she has even an inkling of actual friendliness toward me. And she'd probably stop holding back if she knew I've been nursing a crush on her, especially now that she knows one of the ways she can feed off energy is through sex. She'd probably think I made that part up so she'd sleep with me.

I need to stop stealing glances at her when she's not paying attention. I'm not ready to meet my death yet, and I'm not completely convinced my incantations will be strong enough to hold her back if she's at full strength. Pretty damn sure she's not convinced, either, and I wouldn't put it past her to try if it suits her.

I'm not all that confident when it comes to magic. I should've probably tried when I first met her instead of getting into a nearly fatal hand-to-hand fight, but to be honest, magic isn't the first thing that occurs to me when the shit hits the fan. I only started using it a couple of years ago, and my mind tends to draw blanks when I'm sufficiently freaked out—which happens more often than I'd like to admit.

When I first resurrected Beatrice, I'd hoped I could trick her into thinking I'm as competent as any other Hawthorne, but in reality, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I've made a fool out of myself so many times that I know she doesn't have any respect for me at all. Not that she would have anyway, considering I'm a Hawthorne, I guess. A poor excuse for one, too.
