From the likes of Sophia Amoruso, who started her multi-million-dollar clothing line Nasty Gal from her college bedroom, to Adam Neumann, who founded WeWork after renting out some empty desks in his office, today’s side projects could be tomorrow’s greatest businesses. In recent years, the term ‘side hustle’ has crept into our vocabularies, defining and validating our growing interest in starting businesses in our spare time. One study revealed that over a third of sixteen- to thirty-four-year-olds have a money-making project alongside their full-time job.
However, it’s not all bedroom billionaires and IPOs. Whilst the side hustle might be a stepping stone to financial freedom for some, it’s a ‘second job’ undergone a glamourous rebrand for others. Working on the side can be a necessity: an unfortunate symptom of the ever-narrowing gap between our living costs and incomes. It’s not always about being entrepreneurial or achieving your life goals, it’s about making ends meet in a world of zero-hour contracts, high living costs and low wages. It might also be something in between. Maybe you’re happy with your main earner but want to pad out your income with some extra cash to supplement your travels or simply gain some additional experience that you wouldn’t otherwise get through your day job.
There is a whole spectrum of motivations for starting something but, whatever your reason, side businesses can be a great way to dip your toes into the entrepreneurial waters, without taking on all the risks of diving in head first. That’s not to say it’s all plain sailing. Juggling your main gig and something on the side requires bucket loads of self-motivation, time and a willingness to try and fail on a daily basis. So, if you think the side hustle approach might be right for you, here are five things to consider:
