NINETEEN
"The game's tonight! And Drew has me batting first!" Alice laughed as she pushed Em in her wheelchair to the conference room on the eighth floor.
"So you're not at all excited, I take it?" Em said, grinning up at Alice. "Is your fella going to be there?"
"Nope. He's on call until," Alice looked at her watch, "until midnight. So only another eight hours."
"Doesn't that mean he's just asleep in one of the on-call rooms?" Em asked.
"Not today. He's on his obstetrics rotation and he's got a bunch of women who are expected to pop tonight." Alice laughed and said, "Sorry, that's gross and unprofessional. It was just something his supervisor said to him a while ago, and it sort of stuck."
Em laughed and asked Alice how softball was going.
"I'm getting pretty into it actually. And I'm not half bad!" Alice stopped outside the door to the conference room and mimed pulling down her baseball cap and swinging a bat.
"And what about the other stuff? Getting into that too?" Em grinned. "There are a lot of very attractive lady queers on your team if I recall."
Alice blushed and looked down at her feet. "You know, I'm not too sure about all that. The more I think about Jeff not getting matched to Vancouver, and us or him having to move somewhere else, the more that scares me."
"How so?" Em asked, looking up at Alice from the chair after a quick glance down the corridor to see if the man she was meeting was on his way.
Alice followed her gaze, but the corridor was still empty. "We're a little early for your meeting. What's it about anyway? Why the secrecy?"
Em wagged her finger at Alice. "You're not dodging my question that easily."
Alice smiled and leaned against the wall, folding her arms across her chest. "I may have gotten a little too excited at the idea of being queer. I mean, I find women attractive. I really do. But, I just sort of don't really actually want it to go anywhere, I think, maybe." Alice chewed her lower lip and then looked at Em and asked, "I just don't want to lead anyone on."
Em nodded and smiled at Alice. "I can't really see you doing that, but I get it."
Alice sighed, then said, "You were gay first, right? Before Steve?"
Em laughed and then coughed, turning bright red. Alice rubbed her back and looked around to see if she could get some water, but Em recovered and wiped the tears from her eyes.
"I'll be pretty happy when this cough is done with. I miss being able to talk forever!" Em swallowed and smiled. "To answer your question, no. I wasn't gay, as such. I just only had longer-term things with women up until meeting Steve, so the community mostly just assumed I was gay. 'Coming out' when I started dating him was not the best. A few friends made some terrible dick jokes. Some just couldn't handle me bringing him to queer events. And
