Gloria tracked the time carefully. At 8:05 that night, she allowed Lily to drag her around the park near their apartment. Gloria could never work up much enthusiasm for a walk, so the dog walked her. That was okay, mostly, except when an especially vigorous jerk torqued her shoulder.

At 8:25 she was back home, toweling the mud off Lily’s paws. Four minutes later, she picked up her cell phone and discovered the battery was dead. “Shit!” Gloria stared at the phone. She couldn’t use another line to call Lu, because she hadn’t written the number down. “Damn it. Where’s the charger?” It would take at least fifteen minutes for the phone to become functional again, and by then it would be nearly nine o’clock. “She’s going to hate me,” Gloria moaned to herself. “It’s my one chance.”

Dashing around in search of the phone charger, she finally discovered it on her desk underneath an unpaid gas bill. Once the phone was successfully charging, Gloria had nothing to do but worry. She sat on the bed and stared at the phone. As she thought of Lu waiting for her call, Gloria’s stomach began to churn. The nausea reminded her of the vodka-and-valium illness on the airplane and she breathed deeply, willing herself not to throw up. This isn’t that big of a deal. You can just explain and it’s going to be fine. Besides, you said you didn’t want a new girlfriend.

It was 8:46 before the phone had enough juice to register Lu’s phone number. Gloria grabbed her landline phone and called. Lu answered.

“Hi Lu, it’s Gloria.”

“Hi there. It’s not eight-thirty.”

“I’m so incredibly sorry.” She told Lu what had happened. “It took me forever to charge it and get your phone number out. I should have written it down. I feel terrible to have kept you waiting.” Gloria thought about adding something flirty about making it up to her, but didn’t.

“Well…”

“I was so upset about it I almost threw up.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really. I practically had to do Lamaze to calm myself down.”

Lu laughed. “I had been thinking about our date.”

Whew. Funny how much she cared now, Gloria realized. “What do you have in mind?”

“Let’s go to the Farmer’s Market Saturday morning, and then I’ll make you brunch.”

“You cook?” Gloria only knew how to make spaghetti, and the only vegetables she bought were pre-washed salad mixes.

“Yeah, I love to cook. And the Farmer’s Market at the Embarcadero is great — it’s right on the Bay and they have all this organic produce.”

“I have to be at work by one.”

“No problem. I can drop you off.”

“You have a car?”

“Uh-huh.”

This is getting better and better. “Sounds like an awesome date. I can’t wait.”

“I’ll give you my address and you can come get me at nine on Saturday.”

Gloria paused. “In the morning?”

“Yes, in the morning,” Lu said. “Is that okay?”

“It’s more than okay.” Excitement grew in Gloria’s chest. “I’m always up early and I never have anyone to hang out with. Most people won’t even talk that early.
