Chapter 18 - Day 32

Drew’s core breached and chi flooded his meridians. The pathways he had painstakingly maintained for the last two days, except when he fought his arena match and ‘sparred’, were now permanent.

Please let them work.

Before he even opened his eyes, he activated the technique, and his entire body stiffened. While he maintained the ability, he was unable to move in any way. Drew quickly extinguished the flow of chi, leaned back into the wall behind him, and laughed in relief.

“It worked!”

“Congratulations.” Ml’vnn grunted.

When Matt did not respond with an immature joke, he opened his eyes in confusion. His friend was nowhere to be seen. In addition, Ml’vnn looked like he had fought a tornado and lost. Badly.

The short alien was missing most of the fur on one side of his face, squinted through a single eye, and his right long, floppy ear hung by a string of sinew. The being grimaced in pain, and Drew remembered the alien had no way to shut off the sensation like he and Matt.

“What happened to you?”

Ml’vnn bared his teeth and answered, slowly, “I performed poorly against Shl’teek.”

“You don’t have a healing technique, right? Are you going to be ok?”

“I was given a lesser potency rejuvenation pill. I will be fine.” Ml’vnn groaned. Then added, “Eventually.”

Drew frowned. “How long will it take you to heal?”

“I will be able to fight in tomorrow’s arena match, although I will still be somewhat injured.”

“That’s rough.” Drew commiserated.

“It is the life of a slave.”

Drew frowned. He was about to argue with his fellow captive, but decided to let the statement rest. Instead, he asked, “Where’s Matt?”

“Your companion was retrieved by G’rn for his daily fight in the arena.”

He nodded. “I suppose I’ll just have to wait then. I was going to ask you to attack me to test out my new ability, but you look like you’re not doing so well. I’ll just wait for Matt to get back.”

“That would be for the best.” Ml’vnn agreed.

They continued small talk for another few minutes, when the door to the cultivation chamber suddenly slammed into the internal wall. Matt stood triumphant behind it with his hands raised in the air. Curiously, Drew saw a beast core cupped in his grasp.

“Guess who finally beat Bracky!” Matt bragged.

Drew stood and grinned. “Good job!”

“Gorn even gave me a beast core for winning!”

He stepped over to his friend and clapped a hand on Matt’s shoulder. “Like I told you, you don’t have to mess with your brain to win.”

Matt sneered dismissively. “Of course not. I’m awesome.”

“Well, mister awesome, are you ready to use that core yet?” He gestured toward the large glowing crystal.

“Not yet. I think I need another few days for my domain to calm down.”

Drew had taught Matt the method he used to examine his domain for readiness to advance long before they stepped through the portal. Unlike Drew, Matt could safely attempt to use the core at any point. If his body was not ready, it would not dissolve into a cloud of chi.
