Annette answered her door in a long, flowery robe. “You make five in the morning seem like a reasonable hour for people to be up at.”

“And you make sick look pretty,” I said, and I didn’t have to lie.

Her smile was concerningly weak. “Mind if we sit down?”

I shook my head and closed the door for her before we sat down at her kitchen table, which had a lemon yellow cover that damn near blinded me.

“Here’s my agreement.” She took the NDA paperwork out of a padded folder and laid it on the table.

“I didn’t want you to look for it in your condition,” I said, flipping through it. “You said someone could find it for you.”

“Someone did. My boyfriend came over and found it. Then he went to sleep, in my bed, because it was four a.m..”

“When did you get a boyfriend?”

“I told you about him months ago. Frederick Yang.”

“The bar manager?”

“He’s a lawyer and he works a few floors down from KS, at Mandell and Holland.”

I searched my memory and came up empty. “Speaking of lawyers, I talked to Eric before I called you.” I had asked him to send me a copy of Annette’s NDA, but he’d said it might be several hours before he could send me the digital file. He was at a police station with a client who seemed to be in quite a bit of trouble, so that matter, for the moment, took precedence over my needs.

“So I’m not the only person you woke up at an insane hour?”

She had every right to be aggravated that I woke her up out of the blue, demanding to borrow a physical copy of her NDA, but I was running on too little energy to muster enough give-a-fuck to apologize or defend myself, so I didn’t. “He thinks the customers who got sick from the muffins will get quick settlements, as long as they lawyer up and have medical documentation of their illness.”

“But then what happens to the bakery?”

“They’ll probably go bankrupt.”

“Oh. That’s a shame.”

“Not really, unless you planned to continue shopping there so you could sprinkle their pastries into my coffee.”

Annette put a hand on her stomach. “Fitz, Don’t make me laugh. My entire middle hurts.”

“I’ll go then,” I said, scooping up the NDA, “so you can get back to bed.”

I was leaving her building when my phone rang.

“I can’t find anything negative about you on the internet,” Luka said, launching into a rant before I had a chance to say hello. “Other than what a brilliant student you were and how great you are at advertising and making money. That’s every result. There’s no mention of a DUI or DWI. Or a bad investment. Or a grad school paper that didn’t age well. According to every search engine known to man, you’re a saint.”

“That’s to be expected,” I said stiffly, “since I pay someone to scrub everything else.”

“You…really?”

“Yes. It was a helpful suggestion from Eric, my lawyer.”

“And what exactly are you paying this scrubber to hide, Mr.
