Chapter 24
Earlier that Sunday morning, Emma stared at the steaming cup of coffee. Rosa had fixed it up how Emma liked it. Even adding a dash of cinnamon, the brown flakes of which still floated on the surface. The aroma smelled enticing, but she couldnât bring herself to enjoy it. Fearing that if she enjoyed the coffee, it would give her another excuse to put off what she knew she had to do.
âWhy are you so sad?â Nicolle asked.
The Goodensâ two little girls watched Emma like baby hawks at the breakfast table.
âYeah, you look sad,â Naomi added.
âGirls, eat your breakfast.â Rosa joined them at the table with a bowl of cereal and some toast.
Ben was all suited up as he worked on a piece of bacon. âCall your grandmother yet?â he asked Emma.
âItâs five in the morning there,â Rosa said before taking another bite of her cereal.
âIs her grandma okay?â Nicolle asked.
âSheâs fine,â Rosa said. âBut Emma didnât ask you to be nosinâ around in her business. But if you must know, Emma needs to call her grandmother because sheâs worried about where she is.â
Nicolle looked shocked. âEmma didnât tell her grandma she was visiting us?â
âYouâre in trouble,â Naomi said.
âBut Emmaâs gonna do the right thing and call her.â Ben glanced over at his girls. âBecause Iâd expect nothing less from the two of you.â
âOkay, Daddy,â Nicolle said. âWeâll call you.â
âYeah, donât be trippinâ on us,â Naomi added.
Ben cocked his head. âDid you sayâ¦donât be trippinâ?â
Naomi laughed. âYeah.â
âThatâs it.â Ben got up and put his empty plates in the sink. âFrom now on, we only play jazz in this house.â
âOkay, right now, Daddyâs trippinâ,â Rosa said with a grin.
The two girls laughed. Emma caught herself smiling.
âFine, Iâm punting the ball.â Ben made his way around the table as he picked up his soft briefcase. âIâll go enjoy my jazz in the car. Where it can be appreciated.â He hesitated near Emma, expecting something.
âShe gets up at six,â Emma said. âIâll call her then. Promise.â
âText me when you do.â Ben gave her a quick hug, then did the same for everyone else.
âWhere you going?â Rosa asked him.
Ben hesitated. âWork.â
âBaby, itâs Sunday.â
Ben was confused, then thought about it. He rolled his eyes before he laughed at himself. âDaddy is trippinâ.â
The two little girls laughed again.
