They were both pleasantly tipsy by seven o’clock, and Babs said, “I need something to eat. I’m not used to drinking this much on an empty stomach. Do you want something?”
“Besides a trip to that tiny bathroom so I can have that kiss?” Tracy’s eyes were a little glazed, and her speech wasn’t slurred, but her “s’s” were sibilant. “I don’t drink very often, either.”
“I didn’t say I didn’t drink very often, just that I usually had food with.” Babs found her own statement funny and she giggled. “I’m gonna get a hamburger. I’ll buy you one. I’m feeling generous.” She got up and stood in the always present line, while Tracy leaned against the window and closed her eyes, trying to get a little catnap in.
An employee came in and stood at the counter, chatting with the snack car attendant. His gaze strayed to Babs, the only woman in line, and he said, “Where are you off to in this storm, young lady?”
“To see our parents,” she recited, proud of herself for remembering their lie. She pointed at Tracy. “My sister.”
He turned and looked at Tracy who was sprawled against the window, her mouth open, looking like she’d been hit in the head with a hammer. “Is she all right?”
“Oh, yeah. She’s just tired.”
“You girls live in Detroit?”
“No, sir. Hammond. I mean, Gary. We’re stopping in Hammond so we can go out for tacos with our momma and daddy.”
“Hammond? Honey, that was two hours ago!”
“I mean, Detroit,” she said, looking wild-eyed. “Yeah, Detroit. They have good tacos, too.”
Now his concern turned to suspicion. “Let me see your tickets.”
“You took them. We don’t have them anymore.”
“You have a receipt. Everybody on this train has a receipt.”
“We don’t.” Her eyes darted to Tracy, who was snoring, then back to the man. She looked like she was about to cry, and her voice was high and shaking. “I don’t know why we don’t have a receipt, but we don’t. My sister will know. Let me wake her up.”
Now everyone in the area was staring at Babs and she started to feel perspiration on her neck.
“There’s only one reason you don’t have a receipt, and that’s if you didn’t pay.”
“We have tickets! They’re just not for this train. But our tickets are worth more than the ones we should have.”
“What kinda nonsense is that?”
“We have money. We wanted to pay. They just wouldn’t let us.”
“They wouldn’t let you? That’s a new one. Get your stuff, honey. You’re getting off.”
She reached into her wallet and took out what was left of the $200 she’d removed from the ATM the day before. “See? We have money. We’ll pay you now. We really, really want to pay. I swear they just wouldn’t let us.”
“You most certainly will not pay now. We don’t take cash on this train. This is reserved only.”
“I know,” she said, sniffling. “But they wouldn’t sell us tickets and my friend’s gonna be on TV and I have to go to my great granny’s funeral.
