We drive up the hill and back to our private hell. Eventually, we find ourselves silently walking and then, couch.
Caro and I are next to each other on a dank couch. It looks like it already has blood on it. Our hands are bound behind our backs. Caro is in a state of post-drunken shock and canât focus on anything other than her resignation and despair. It feels like sheâs preparing herself for the pain and death thatâs coming. Sheâs beating herself up for not being more protective.
Iâm going to attempt to shoulder the majority of whatâs coming. Iâm very versed in pain, and in my own limits. I know what I can handle without losing myself. I can remain emotionless through a lot, which will be an asset in protecting Caroline. Her life and mine are similar in that theyâve both been relatively free of physical pain. But she doesnât know all the damage Iâve caused myself. She doesnât know that Iâm conditioned to tolerate pain.
Jim and his shorter crony are standing before us, still aiming their guns at our heads.
âWhy us?â I ask out loud, not expecting an answer.
âWell,â Jim starts, âWe saw you chatting up that friend of yours at that bar.â
âAnd?â
I keep my eyes carefully on the floor. I was flirting with Daisy when I blacked out, but I never imagined that my attraction to her could have gotten me in trouble.
âYou were all over her, and I turned to Alex here, and we bought yâall drinks.â
âWhat about me?â Caro says emotionlessly.
Alex starts laughing, and I look up at the two of them. Alex turns to Jim, and he nods in agreement.
âYou were so fucking drunk,â Alex laughs, âwe didnât even have to try. You passed the fuck out in the parking lot.â
âItâs a shame about your friend, though.â Jim smirks and motions to me.
I never considered that Daisy might have been hurt or in a bad situation. Iâve hardly thought about her at all since meeting Caroline.
âShe woke up,â he says. âJumped outta the car and left a big grease stain up the highway.â
She what? That canât be true.
âDaisyâ¦â I trail off, not comprehending. âDaisy jumped out of the car?â
âShe hit the ground so hard that she just fell apart.â
âDid the best we could to get her off the road. Tossed her in one of the rooms; we got a few bodies lying around here we still ainât buried.â
âLike four or five, probably,â Alex confirms.
âSo Daisy is dead,â I repeat.
âSomething like that.â
Caro turns to me with a grim expression.
âWhy are you doing this to us?â I ask, dizzy.
âI donât know,â Jim says. âBecause you were there.â
I shift violently and throw my hands in front of me, but theyâre immediately caught. This pushes Caro into action, but Alex brings the butt of his rifle down hard on her lower face. She bucks backward. I watch and struggle as a rope is knotted around my wrists. Then Iâm thrown backward on the couch next to Caroline.
She spits out a tooth and reels.
