A ghost of a smile softened her eyes. “I think we need to find a solution that works for both of us. Something that fits Mr. Fortune’s ideas about his gift. And that means we need to try to find a solution that’s fair. Not just for me, but for you, too.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t care about fair,” Sebastian said impatiently. “Look, Slick. I don’t need anything like this. I live in a 1980 Winnebago. That’s all I have the time to take care of. And I realize figuring out what and how to do something about this place will be complicated, but we’ll find a way to do it.”

He could see her lips part, knew she planned on arguing with him—again. For darn sure he never intended to touch her, knowing how disastrously that kiss had worked out a couple hours before. But damn. She looked like a waif, standing in the stupid sunlight in the doorway. This city-slick, city-skinny, city-tough scrapper with a pug’s stubborn chin. And he reached out, only meaning to connect his hand to her shoulder, because tarnation, it was Christmas. And she seemed alone, like him. And because they’d shared something extraordinary one year ago…and today.

But she whirled around faster than lightning when she felt his fingers on her shoulder. Her face tilted up to his, and there was this Something in her eyes. An awareness. An elemental sexual awareness that seemed to obliterate everything else in the landscape. “We’re a crazy pair, aren’t we?” she murmured.

“Completely.”

“I can’t imagine we’d have anything in common. Something tells me you’d have a heart attack near a mall—”

“You’ve got that right. And you’d likely get a heart attack if you saw a mouse.”

“No heart attack. But I’d shriek loud enough to wake the dead.” She chuckled, but then her mouth softened. Not in a smile. But in a soft line that seemed shaped just for him. “We’ll find a way to make this right for both of us, Sebastian. That’s a promise.”

“You’ve got the same promise from me.”

He bent down. Even as he reminded himself that he’d sworn—sworn—not to kiss her again, he found his mouth drawn to hers, pulled, compelled as if strings were tugging his lips toward hers…and then on hers. Strangely, it wasn’t really a kiss. More like the brushing of his lips to her lips. A promise of some kind, nothing stronger than that, yet desire suddenly ripped through him like a knife tearing through silk.

A few moments later, when she left, when he saw her zooming down the drive in that girl-yellow baby Cabriolet, he felt the air seeping out of his lungs in a long, low gush. He thought my God, that woman was trouble. Bad trouble. Trouble like he couldn’t remember any woman being for him.

He had to find a way to sever that strange bond between them before either of them got hurt.

So he would.
