On October 27, 1833, in a letter that did not reach its destination until March 8, 1834, Leopardi’s trusted friend Vincenzo Gioberti wrote to him from Paris, where he had gone into exile after suffering four months in prison in Turin. Even if he had not known of any other Italians who were suffering political persecution at the time, Gioberti’s testimony would have been sufficient to make him aware of the fact that Italy’s Risorgimento would not happen without the sacrifices of many of his countrymen.
