CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Fox in a Witch House

Vega stood as Fabienne rushed off, followed by Lovelie, their auburn hair bobbing through the crowd. She didn’t want to leave Mirlande alone with a potential murderer. She made eye contact with Sadie, who was watching with interest.

Sadie lifted her chin, as if understanding she was now the babysitter.

“Hey lady, would you sit down? You’re blocking my view!” a man shouted behind Vega.

She turned her attention on the pudgy middle-aged man who was certain to be some student’s father. She glowered at him.

Vega turned back to Izidro. “One of my students—”

“I understand. Duty calls.” Izidro said, flashing a brief smile. “Do what you need to.”

She was relieved he wasn’t the needy kind of date who needed her fawning over him at every moment. Even so, she regretted that this was the third interruption to her date.

Vega navigated to the aisle and trailed behind Fabienne and Lovelie at a distance. The two girls headed toward the stadium bathroom. The outside of the public restrooms were situated near the food stands, tiled mosaics decorating the wall in the school colors. Vega pushed open the restroom door. The patterns of tilework were just as elaborate on the inside.

The stadium bathrooms were meant to be more majestic than the ones in the school—they were intended for impressing parents and guests. Each porcelain sink stood on Greek columns, sculpted with mermaid tails and clawed feet. Lovelie stood at one of them, splashing water against her face. Her breath was ragged. It appeared Fabienne wasn’t the only one ill. Lovelie’s ochre skin had turned a sickly shade of green.

Vega placed a hand on Lovelie’s shoulder. “What’s wrong? Has someone hexed you?”

Dwayne Banksia’s Regurgitation Spell was one of the more common student pranks used at games, often to make opponents on the other team sick. Those who were caught casting it were assigned appropriate consequences.

Lovelie leaned against the wall. “A hex? No.”

Retching came from one of the wooden stalls.

Vega examined the other stalls for spectators. They were all alone.

“Did Joo-Hyun do this to you?” Vega asked.

“Joo-Hyun? No, why would she do that?” Lovelie closed her eyes. Her forehead was crinkled up as though she were in pain.

Fabienne left the stall and leaned down to drink from the faucet. “It’s the crowd.” She swished water around her mouth before spitting it out.

“What do you mean?” Vega asked.

Lovelie grimaced. “Going to the cafeteria for meals is hard enough. I only go long enough to eat my meals before getting out of there as fast as I can. But an event like this with so many people—it’s hard to block everyone out.”

Fabienne swished more water in her mouth and spit into the sink. “Mirlande is the only one who hasn’t come into her powers yet,” Fabienne said. “She gets brief impressions when she touches people, but that’s it. She doesn’t have to work to keep people out.”

Vega hadn’t considered how torturous this task would be for them. But in part, that was because she didn’t know the full extent of their abilities.
