Finding Elaine Benoit was a needed win for a project that often felt out of control. But the toll of hearing one tale after another of mutilation, assault, or bottomless loneliness began to add up. Widman ran regularly in the nearby hills, but in the winter the roads were too icy. He returned to the same cheap motel because he liked the exercise room. At least he could run on the treadmill there and leave the stories behind. If he was in Burlington on a weekend, he hiked for a couple of hours to Camel’s Hump in the Green Mountains.

In the evening, Widman distracted himself by wandering Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace. The open-air mall was paved with terracotta bricks and teemed with stores and restaurants. When the temperature wasn’t freezing, the restaurants fenced off outdoor sections and filled them with happy diners. Widman set for himself the goal of buying one chocolate chip cookie from a different restaurant every night to cheer himself up.
