CHAPTER

TWENTY-TWO

“I am investigating a murder that took place on this property, so it makes perfect sense for me to return,” I said stiffly.

“Well, lucky me that you decided to pop up in the exact place I happen to be.” With a grin, he straightened up to his full height and moved toward me.

“That’s purely coincidental.”

Was it? Mr. Ricci had intruded on my thoughts mere seconds before I’d been whisked here. I don’t know why he’d have any pull on me though. I’d only met the man once for heaven’s sake and in light of what I’d just learned about him from Jennifer’s Google search, I wasn’t altogether keen on furthering our acquaintance.

“Sure, it is.”

He was still smiling in a self-congratulatory manner that set my teeth on edge. There was a fine line between confidence and arrogance and Mr. Ricci was poised to take a flying leap over it. I needed to set him straight before he got the wrong idea about me.

“Don’t flatter yourself. I transported myself to this area of the hotel because it’s the best vantage point for me to see the doors which my investigative partner will be walking through shortly. As I am not in possession of your schedule, I had no way of knowing you would be here. Why are you loitering by this reception desk anyway?”

“I go where the action is and I can usually count on check-out time to be entertaining. There was a gal here a few minutes ago who raised a ruckus about wanting a ‘murder discount’ on her bill because of what happened to that junkhead.”

“Are a lot of people checking out early because of the murder?”

“Eh.” He shrugged his broad shoulders, which were once again encased in a beautifully tailored suit, and I felt a momentary pang of regret for not heeding Jennifer’s advice about changing into more fashionable attire. “A few, but there are more guests who’ve asked to extend their stays because they’re getting a thrill out of being on the site of a bloody homicide. If they only knew that this wasn’t the only one to take place on the property . . .” he trailed off with a frown.

I perked up with interest. “You were the first person murdered here, weren’t you? And your body was never found because it was buried somewhere on these grounds, which is why you’re haunting the place.”

“No flies on you, doll. How’d you know that my body never turned up?”

“I mentioned you to a friend and she was curious about your background, so she looked you up on the computer.”

“I’m on the computer?” He looked inordinately pleased to hear this.

“Yes, well, that’s where history is recorded these days, and you are rather infamous what with your unsavory profession and assorted romantic dalliances with notable women.”

The Cheshire Cat grin was back in full force. “You really did your homework on me.”

“I like to be fully informed about the people I associate with.”

“So, we’re associating now?” He waggled his eyebrows suggestively.

“As disembodied individuals who may prove useful to each other, yes.
