The Promise

ABIGAIL

It’s been a fabulous week with Ghost. We get up together, get ready together, and head out at the same time. Our evenings are quiet, and the more time we spend together, the more I know how deeply I love him.

Ghost’s had no problems sharing his life stories with me. Being abandoned, then losing his adoptive parents was traumatic enough, but to live on the streets is just mind-boggling for one so young. He tells me about his army buddies and the kinship they had, which only made their deaths more tragic.

“I visit their graves every now and again,” Ghost tells me as we lie on the couch, him with his back to the cushions and me with my back to his front, snuggled in tight. His arms are wrapped around me like a warm cloak.

“To honor them?” I ask, tilting my head to search his face.

“More as a reminder to myself to keep our promise to one another.”

“Promise?”

“One night, we were hanging out drinking. Shooting the shit and talking about our life when we go home. We each talked about the one thing we would do when we got back home. Some stuff was the same, you know, like, kiss my wife every night, play ball with my kid. Then other guys would talk about the places they would go. That night, we made a list, and each one of us had to put down something we would do for each other if anyone of us didn’t make it back to do it themselves.” Ghost sighs out a long slow breath. “At the time, I didn’t know I would be the only one to come home.”

I gasp. “Oh, snookums.”

“I remembered that list in McCabe’s pocket. I took it with me. Still have it.” His voice cracks. “I haven’t done any of them yet. I can’t seem to get started, but a promise is a promise, and I need to get on that. Instead, I go to the cemetery and take out the list and read it.”

“I can understand that. If you take the final step, it’s like saying goodbye to each of them one by one. You’ve already mourned them once, and you’d be doing it all over again.”

“Yeah, baby,” he murmurs by my temple, his warm, soft lips on my skin.

“I can do them with you,” I suggest.

“It’s a lot to ask of someone, little sparrow. Some of the things on the list you may be uncomfortable doing.”

“Then take Guard. He’d do anything for you.”

“True.”

“Even better, take one brother for each request on the list. Make a new memory and honor the person who gives you that.” I think that would be a great way for Ghost to reconnect with the Pride. He’s mentioned in the last few days that he needs his new crew to trust him. The prospects don’t know him well, and he’s trying to find a way to bond.

“Maybe. I’ll have to think on it,” he says pensively. “But if I do this, I’m saving one for you and me.
