Chapter 18

“I see,” said the woman. She placed a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles on her nose and gazed at me sternly. “Harry McCabre and Jarrett Zephyr-Thornton. Oh, yes, I have heard about you. The Wraith Wranglers, occasionally helped by Sir Geoffrey Buckley.” A dreamy look came into her eyes. “I was a friend of Buckley’s, you know. He used to visit me all the time. Now, not so much.”

“I can tell him to visit you, if you’d like,” I hastened to say.

“Yes, that would be very nice,” she said vaguely. “The thing is, when you’re dealing with a ghoul, like the one you just told me about, it’s imperative to cast him out before he has the opportunity to carry out his nasty little plan—and trust me, he has a nasty little plan all worked out and ready to bring to fruition.”

“What’s his plan?” I asked, rubbing my arms to quell the goosebumps that had appeared there.

“I can’t tell you. Only the ghoul can, obviously. What I can say is that you have to defend yourselves against him if you are to survive this episode. Oh, yes,” she added when we gave gasps of shock, “he does intend to murder you—each and every one of you. Not just your clients but their protectors as well.”

“And how do we protect ourselves?” asked Jarrett with croaky voice.

“Wait here,” she instructed, and got up and moved off a lot more briskly than I would have expected from someone her age. Moments later, she returned with a string of what looked like gold amulets dangling from red strings. She placed them on the table and sorted through them. There were a few dozen, and they looked like good-luck charms. Some of them depicted dragons, others chickens, and still others serpents. “You need to spread these around your apartment,” she said, addressing Jarrett.

He stared down at the charms. “Do I have to? They’re quite hideous.”

Her lips tightened. “They might be hideous but they’ll also protect you. Not to the extent that they will eradicate this evil presence from your lives—but they will weaken its power and its hold over you.”

“Its hold?” I asked.

“Yes. Haven’t you noticed an increased tendency to bicker? That’s the ghoul. He wants to break the bond that unites you so he can better destroy you.”

Jarrett nodded. “My boyfriend has been behaving rather strangely lately. He’s not usually this mean to me, and last night he called me a… a poofter! Can you credit it?”

Evette placed her hand on the amulets. “That’s why you need these.”

Jarrett eyed them disdainfully. “The color scheme,” he muttered. “It will clash with the furniture.”

“What do we do to vanquish this ghoul?” I asked anxiously.

“There is a ritual that must be performed,” said Evette. “I’ll teach you the exact words that you have to use, but first you have to find something the ghoul wants.”

“What he wants?”

“Yes, tell me what he wants—what he really, really wants,” Evette said.

“He wants… the girls, I guess,” I said. Then it dawned on me.
