Chapter 18
âI see,â said the woman. She placed a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles on her nose and gazed at me sternly. âHarry McCabre and Jarrett Zephyr-Thornton. Oh, yes, I have heard about you. The Wraith Wranglers, occasionally helped by Sir Geoffrey Buckley.â A dreamy look came into her eyes. âI was a friend of Buckleyâs, you know. He used to visit me all the time. Now, not so much.â
âI can tell him to visit you, if youâd like,â I hastened to say.
âYes, that would be very nice,â she said vaguely. âThe thing is, when youâre dealing with a ghoul, like the one you just told me about, itâs imperative to cast him out before he has the opportunity to carry out his nasty little planâand trust me, he has a nasty little plan all worked out and ready to bring to fruition.â
âWhatâs his plan?â I asked, rubbing my arms to quell the goosebumps that had appeared there.
âI canât tell you. Only the ghoul can, obviously. What I can say is that you have to defend yourselves against him if you are to survive this episode. Oh, yes,â she added when we gave gasps of shock, âhe does intend to murder youâeach and every one of you. Not just your clients but their protectors as well.â
âAnd how do we protect ourselves?â asked Jarrett with croaky voice.
âWait here,â she instructed, and got up and moved off a lot more briskly than I would have expected from someone her age. Moments later, she returned with a string of what looked like gold amulets dangling from red strings. She placed them on the table and sorted through them. There were a few dozen, and they looked like good-luck charms. Some of them depicted dragons, others chickens, and still others serpents. âYou need to spread these around your apartment,â she said, addressing Jarrett.
He stared down at the charms. âDo I have to? Theyâre quite hideous.â
Her lips tightened. âThey might be hideous but theyâll also protect you. Not to the extent that they will eradicate this evil presence from your livesâbut they will weaken its power and its hold over you.â
âIts hold?â I asked.
âYes. Havenât you noticed an increased tendency to bicker? Thatâs the ghoul. He wants to break the bond that unites you so he can better destroy you.â
Jarrett nodded. âMy boyfriend has been behaving rather strangely lately. Heâs not usually this mean to me, and last night he called me a⦠a poofter! Can you credit it?â
Evette placed her hand on the amulets. âThatâs why you need these.â
Jarrett eyed them disdainfully. âThe color scheme,â he muttered. âIt will clash with the furniture.â
âWhat do we do to vanquish this ghoul?â I asked anxiously.
âThere is a ritual that must be performed,â said Evette. âIâll teach you the exact words that you have to use, but first you have to find something the ghoul wants.â
âWhat he wants?â
âYes, tell me what he wantsâwhat he really, really wants,â Evette said.
âHe wants⦠the girls, I guess,â I said. Then it dawned on me.
