CHAPTER 13

Rumble in Lake Nowhere

Trudi had been running through Lake Nowhere’s sparse main street for only a short amount of time before she spotted footprints in the damp, spongy sand that matched the shoe soles of each brother. This was something she kept on mental file for specifically such a situation as this. You see, Trudi planned ahead for the future and when the future finally came, her plan paid dividends. What I’m trying to say, kid, is that it’s never too early to start up a Roth IRA account. You should look into that.

She followed the footsteps at a full sprint to where they ended: the door to what appeared to be the town hall. Bursting through the entrance, she saw Valentine and J.J. standing at a table in the center of the room.

“Oh man, I thought I’d never see you guys again!” she said with great relief. Her mind was running a mile a minute. She unloaded on them.

“It’s Coach Hank! Coach Hank stole the rubies! I had to go through this whole ordeal with Inspector Horvath who is an absolute idiot by the way, but I almost convinced him that Siobhan stole the jewels and I used, like, legitimate forensic science to prove it and everything was so airtight but when we found the briefcase the jewels were still missing and I was stumped! Stumped!”

She smacked her forehead, going on: “But I had missed one thing and it was so obvious! Siobhan stole the jewels! And then someone stole them after that! Inspector Horvath assured me that there was no point when the lounge car was left alone but I heard for myself when I snuck in there and hid under a pile of potatoes! He was wrong! When Inspector Horvath was interviewing Coach Hank there was a noise on the roof! Was that you guys? Anyway, he sent the conductor to go check it out and that gave Coach Hank a perfect window to steal the jewels from where Siobhan stashed them when the interview was over! But why? I don’t know why! But he’s the only one who had the time to do it!”

She ended her speech huffing and puffing. J.J. and Valentine blinked vacantly at her a few times.

“Man, that was some great deductive reasoning,” said J.J. “But…um…we know.”

Trudi’s shoulders deflated. “What? How?”

“Because he told us,” said Valentine, motioning over to Coach Hank standing at the other end of the table. Between them were the ruby jewels of the duchess of Cordelia, sitting upon an unwrapped handkerchief.

“Howdy!” said Coach Hank, giving her a friendly wave.

Trudi’s mouth fell open. “…oh.”

“We’re really glad to see you,” Valentine said, as she joined them around the table. “J.J. and I were exploring the area and we came across Coach Hank here trying to stash the jewels for later retrieval. We caught him in the act.”

“That’s me,” Coach Hank said with a sheepish look.

“And this is where we need your help, Trudes,” said J.J. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.
