“Rachel, I don’t know what to do.” Simone sighed and rested her head in her hands.

Still wearing her neck brace, Rachel couldn’t turn her head but her eyes darted in Simone’s direction. “About what?”

“Ghost.”

“Who’s Ghost?”

“Lucas, your half-brother. Remember, I told you about him?” Rachel seemed to have short term memory loss since her last beating from Karl. Some things stuck. Other things didn’t survive beyond her most recent nap. Whether the reason was medical or Rachel being so lost in her own thoughts she didn’t have any room for new information, Simone wasn’t sure.

“Right, the guy you’ve been screwing.”

“It’s more than that.”

“Maybe for you.”

“He rescued us. He says he’ll protect us from Karl. He says he loves me,” Simone said, listing the reasons Ghost himself had given her to have faith in him.

“Karl said the same things in the beginning.”

“Ghost isn’t anything like Karl.” But what if he was? It had been so easy to trust him when they were having sex. When they had no choice but to trust each other while trying to escape Donald’s grasp. What if all her feelings were based on a hero complex? Now that she had plenty of time to think, everything seemed hopelessly complicated.

“Can’t trust any man.”

“He’s done everything he said he would.”

“Who are you trying to convince? Me or yourself?”

That’s a very good question. “He gave us phones,” Simone threw out lamely, avoiding Rachel’s question.

“We don’t have them now.”

“He needs them because we don’t know which one Karl is going to use to contact him. He’ll give them back afterwards.”

“Will he? Or did he take them because he found out I called a number that wasn’t on the list he’d programmed into my phone?”

Simone bit her lip, thinking hard. “I told him we’d need to contact people at the college. Besides, he only took the phones after Karl called.”

“Whatever.”

This wasn’t like the Rachel she knew. Even if Rachel wasn’t on board with coming to Ghost’s compound, she would still help Simone sort through her feelings. Had Karl finally broken Rachel so badly she couldn’t be objective anymore? Had something happened that Rachel wasn’t telling her about? “Rachel, what’s wrong? What aren’t you telling me?”

Silence lingered between them for so long Simone thought Rachel might have gone back to sleep. Finally, Rachel spoke with a hefty dose of venom in her voice. “The house -- our house! -- has been burned to the ground. Nothing left but ashes! All of our things, just gone. We have nothing!”

“How do you even know that?”

“Your boyfriend didn’t tell you that, did he?” Angry tears leaked from Rachel’s eyes. “How are we going to survive when we have nothing? When we have no money? When we have no skills, no diplomas and nothing to sell? We’re whores, and we can’t even sell our bodies as long as we’re locked inside this stupid farm. Your boyfriend owns us. He’s no better than Karl!”

“Rachel, slow down. How did you find out about the house? Did Karl tell you that? You know you can’t trust anything he says.
