“I’m not scared of Maddox,” Archie sneered, crossing his arms over his weedy chest. It was early evening, and as much as I’d wanted to head straight home for a hot shower once I’d arrived back in Savannah, I’d headed over to Archie’s instead. The night sky outside of his big fancy apartment windows was tinged with a hint of red, and I was eerily reminded of blood on a dark, polished stone floor.

I rolled my eyes. “Maybe you should be. He’s already killed two members of your coven. He’s almost done cleaning house.”

Archie glared at me, his chin jutting out defiantly. “Why don’t you worry about yourself?”

“There’s a murderer on the loose, and I found both of his victims,” I pointed out, as though I were talking to a small child. “I’m plenty worried. But I also don’t think I’m in any immediate danger.”

Tilting his head back, Archie considered my words before glancing at me down the length of his nose like a detective who was trying to reach a conclusion. If it weren’t for the fact this wasn’t Clue and we were dealing with a real killer, it would have been comical. “You think he’s going to pin it on you.”

I snorted with a mirthless laugh. “Already has. I’ve been questioned twice—once at the station.”

That seemed to bother Archie more. Being second-in-line as a potential murder victim still gave him leeway. Being first was definitely more of a pressing issue. He tried to shake off how he was feeling, but the tenseness in his shoulders had him resorting to hunching like Nosferatu creeping around a murky castle too close to dawn.

Maybe he needed some time alone with his thoughts. Coming straight here from Atlanta hadn’t really given me a suitable place for a pit-stop, and if nothing else judging from what I had seen of Archie’s apartment I could count on him to have a pristine toilet.

I shuffled my weight. “Is it okay if I use your bathroom?”

“Down the hall, second door on the left,” he said, sounding put out I’d even ask but knowing full well if he wanted my help, he’d better agree.

“Thanks, you’re a doll,” I snarked, taking myself off on a restroom adventure.

The bathroom was more or less everything I’d expected—a shower with no tub, gleaming white subway tiles everywhere, minimal bathroom products. Everything about Archie screamed no fuss, because all of that came from his sparkling personality. I did my business efficiently, and then washed my hands in the snowy basin. When I glanced up at the sleek medicine cabinet mirror, though, I did a double-take.

The mirror itself wasn’t pristine. In fact, I could see strange, smudged markings on the otherwise shiny surface. Squiggles and circles, and something that looked like the symbol for the Taurus star-sign, only… not. I frowned and leaned closer, angling my head different ways in the light to see if I could make out more. Fortunately, though, there were no pesky killer demons in sight.

This time.

With a shudder, I took off back for the kitchen.
