Chapter 10

Three’s Company

"Do you think Tema will wait in her car or come up and get us?" I asked, putting on my shoes. Midnight had arrived, and we were preparing to meet up with the blue-haired office lady.

"She'll wait in her car for sure," Mel said, twirling her wand and donning her usual magical girl attire. "In her mind, the less time out in the open, the better."

Considering Melody and Tempa's outfits, I completely understood the latter's desire not to parade herself around. "We should leave now. She's probably waiting in the parking lot."

Melody nodded before looking at Alto, who had already gotten comfortable on the living room couch. "We'll be back in a few hours."

"Good luck," Alto let out an indifferent yawn as she began to flip through the late-night channels.

Saying our goodbyes, we exited the apartment and walked out into the breezy late spring night. My gaze instantly fell on the sleek car parked inconspicuously in the corner of the lot.

"You can go ahead and jump up to the roof. I'll get Tema..." I didn't want Melody to be out in the open where one of the apartment residents might catch a glimpse of her. Even if her weapon prevented people from recognizing her, someone might put two and two together if they constantly saw magical girl Melody walking out of the building.

"Sure! I can't wait to see what Tempa looks like! I haven't seen her transform in years." With two large leaps, she got on the roof of the building while I descended the steps.

I inched my way over to the overpriced vehicle, tapping on the dimmed windows. Slowly, the glass rolled down, revealing Tempa, who had already transformed.

"Where's Mel? Or rather, Melody?" Tempa didn't even bother saying hello as she asked about her friend's whereabouts.

"She's waiting for us on top of the apartment," I answered Tempa's question before looking inside. "Did you drive all the way here transformed?"

"Of course! Logically speaking, it makes more sense to do it at my house than outside in the parking lot," Tempa huffed, justifying her rather pointless actions.

"You could have done it inside Melody's apartment..."

"And waste precious time walking up the steps? I think not!" The older woman adjusted her glasses, dismissing the very idea of setting foot in Melody's home.

I could poke plenty of holes in Tempa's decision, but I wanted to avoid keeping Mel waiting. "Let's hurry to the roof then. I'm sure Melody already has a patrol route ready for us."

Tempa nodded and stepped out of the car. In a few swift motions, the two of us scaled up the side of the building and landed at the top of the complex where Melody waited.

"Hey, Tempa ho-" Melody stopped herself, her eyes scanning her former comrade.

"W-what?" Tempa stiffened, recognizing her friend's invasive stare. "Is there something wrong?"

"No, it's just..." Melody paused, trying to think of the best way to word her following statement. "I just thought you'd be in better shape," she said, unable to hold back her thoughts.
