⢠Prepare to have a conversation with your boss about your paycheck. Never think that you canât ask for more money, but do be ready with a game plan. You donât want to merely waltz into your bossâs office at nine A.M. Monday morning and say, âYo, I need [or want] a raise.â Think about it: If someone were to walk up to you and start with âI needâ or âI want,â you naturally would feel put on the defensive. Why? Because those words are all about the other person, whom you are somehow obliged now to please. With that kind of approach, youâre not likely to give the person entirely what heâs asking for. Neither will your boss. Thereâs a right and wrong way to raise yourself.
For some, confronting the boss about their paycheck is an uncomfortable experience, and avoided at literally all costs. But you need to muster the strength to have this conversation and not wait another year. The secret to doing this successfully is to write out what you want to say first, highlighting specific accomplishments and results in the past that have enhanced the company, and what you plan to achieve for the company in the future. Have a clear sense of what you want to get, but keep the focus on your boss, his company, and what you can do for him. Donât let the boss decide how much of a raise you should get. After all, heâs not interested in your problem; heâs only interested in his problems, which is why you have to treat the conversation like a sales pitch. You are the seller, and heâs the buyer. Youâre selling your ability to solve more of his problems, and with that comes a higher price. Try to mention exactly what types of problems you think you can solve. Try to find out what your boss needs in order to make his life better, and then try to fill that hole. Be specific. Itâs okay to make strong promises.
If you havenât a clue how much you should ask for, speak with fellow coworkers about the average raises, but then go higher. Did you know that most employers actually respect those who negotiate better pay? It shows that youâre strongwilled, focused, and business-oriented. Youâre not going to just sit back and accept whatâs given to you. Instead, youâre going to take charge, be assertive, and do whatâs in your best interests. This kind of attitude translates to the kind of attitude a company needs in its employees. It says youâre going to do whatâs in the best interests of the company so long as the company treats you in its best interest. This is a mutually beneficial relationship.
At a minimum, let your boss know that youâre interested in advancing and that youâre committed to doing greater things for the company. If you work for a large company, simply making yourself better known to your boss can present new opportunities for you. He or she
