Author: How has being a transit operator affected your romantic life, your relationships?

Operator 1: What people don’t really understand is that shift work can be dramatically paralyzing for a relationship. Obviously it helps if the person is understanding and knows that the shifts that we get often times consume the majority of the day. I have seen plenty of operators date only people who work a shift pattern also because they understand the difficulties that shift works comes with. I have dated and many of the partners that I got couldn’t handle the shifts that I was doing until I met a nurse. It is truly difficult to maintain a healthy relationship if the other person is not understanding.

Operator 2: I have been married for 12 years now and the whole secret to staying married as an operator is to go straight home to your wife when your shift is done. I am not kidding. Yes, it is good to create friendships and bond with your buddies but time spent with your work buddies could be time spent with your wife. I am already away from her sometimes 12-13 hours per day. She knows that, when I can, I am coming home to her.

Operator 3: I have been married for four years now and we have a beautiful daughter and yes shift work does suck but I take every opportunity I can to be with them. They come first, second and third. A lot of operators, especially men, when they see a lot of beautiful women taking the transit system, forget to realize what they have at home.

Operator 4: Twenty-five years together with my wife but been married for 20 years and let me tell you it has its ups and downs but we are still strong. I know that this company has a very high divorce rate. It is really hard to maintain a relationship due to the shifts and schedules. But my wife and I knew when I first started as a TTC operator what we were getting ourselves into and we stuck it out. Now in our later life, our love for each other has never been sweeter and more beautiful than ever. We went through a lot at the beginning of my TTC career and there have been plenty of opportunities to cheat with the women who come on the bus but at the end of the day is it really worth it?

Operator 5: I am not going to pretend like I am some angel. I have been married a few times and all of my marriages ended in divorce. When I got this job being an operator it was like the women came out of the woodwork. At the end of shifts often times I would receive phone numbers written on transfers and given to me. What made it so tempting to engage and entertain are these long shifts being away from home. It was like my work became my life and my home was just a place to stay.
