WILL SEE YOU NOW

Q: But . . . I smoke half a pack a day and I get winded quite easily. I am 35 years old and have not done any serious exercise since being on the high school baseball team. Does this mean I can’t take on the six steps and the eight-week program?

A: Absolutely not. Smoking (just like being fat) is no barrier to embracing the six steps. The good news is that once you have that circuit nailed you are going to come to hate those cancer sticks. You will feel firsthand how they are limiting you and holding you back from realizing your full potential. You will want to enjoy the full capacity of your lungs so you can take on a hill without feeling as though you are about to have an asthma attack—and you are going to want to quit. Running is a big step toward giving up smoking. It will also help stave off any potential weight gain when you do give it up because the running hopefully will burn off that extra food you may crave.

The program may be harder for you—suck it up. You may start coughing up a lot of gunk from those smoke-addled lungs—be horrified. And then one day you are going to wake up and want to run farther faster, and the only thing stopping you is your smoking habit. It boils down to a simple choice. The inner grit you will have acquired through the eight-week program, the extra fitness, the awareness of your body, and an increased desire to cherish it all will help you make the right choice. Don’t take a moment while this all sinks in to light up a cigarette. Lace up your sneakers, and BEGIN STEP 1 NOW.
