5 October 1916

My dearest Mater,

[. . .] I left Shorncliffe at 5:03 this afternoon. In all fourteen officers are going to the 22nd and I presume my destination is the same in view of General Watson’s letter to General Carson. I am going to find out for certain tomorrow whether I am being sent to my old Battalion or to the 4th Division. In any case I will advise you by cable of any future development in my plans.

[. . .] Poor Bauset’s death grieved me very much. He was most courageous and had a very level head. I received a letter from him dated 12 September, three or four days before his death. The last sentences of the letter (written in French) in the light of later events are very touching. “. . . It is not the B.T.C. (Back to Canada) that attracts me. It is rather a change of scene and command that will heal my nervous system. I will perhaps be in the next offensive. Regards to you, Maurice.” Elsewhere in the letter he says (still in French) “You know that we are now on a new front, which you have guessed. We will do something very big before long. . . .” He was right. He died, only a few days after. The greatest and the grandest thing any man can do, he laid down his life for his fellow men. He will live on in the minds and in the hearts of all who knew him.
