Chapter 11: Foresight and Aldorglory

I’m not asking this out of spite… but why is it that when I go underground in some ancient something or another it is always accompanied by a roar, or howl, or some other ominous sound. And it’s not like whatever makes them is small either. To create a sound loud enough to shake the walls would require some magnificent vocal cords. What we had going for us this time was that the things roaring didn’t wait, they just showed up within minutes of being alerted to our presence. They may as well, not like being trapped underground since birth behind two barely moveable stone doors would net you any quality of life.

That brings us to the current predicament. Three paths, each occupied by a beast with striped fur, canines twice as big as their heads, each of them towering twice as high as Dimmer. Most worrisome of all? They were dead set on making sure we didn’t leave here alive. If I were to name them then it would have to be after their bad attitudes instead of their features. Or… I could name them in combination with the bad attitudes and their features to make things easier.

My mind was so occupied thinking of useless shit that I even started naming them out loud. I suppose Leah’s carefree naming when we first saw the Lightfelled rubbed off on me. “ForinaFur? No, how about… StripedLaura? No, I can’t be that obvious… it must be subtle. Fangina? Yeah, that has a nice ring to it. I dub thee, monster Fangina! Ruler of all things nobody cares about! Carrier of saliva that melts armor, and vanquisher of mighty heroes! Fangfinas arrive in groups because they are scared of the dark and love long walks in the park!”

Wilhelm was scared out of his mind. As many times as he’s come down here, it was clear he was able to avoid these things without any issue. Leave it to Dimmer to make an entrance. Wilhelm cried out, “What are you even spouting off over there? Do you not understand what’s in front of us right now? That is death incarnate! One bite from them would be enough to snap your body in two. It might not even take one bite; it might be one close-range howl that stops your heart!”

Reverting to my wise-ass old ways, I quipped, “Jokes on you! I already know we are about to be ripped to shreds by those claws. I just came to terms with it before you did and wanted to at least leave one more accomplishment to my name before we die. It brings a tear to my eye to think that I could name them so perfectly. You’re so busy worried about the next step while I’m on step four already! Now I need to find a way to leave my accomplishment behind so someone else can learn of my brilliance.” Being around Wilhelm takes me back to the old days. He might just be good for my mental health, glasses, haircut, and all.
