“We’ll get you home,” Ruby said. “I’m sorry about the fire, Canterlope. I didn’t mean to scare you.” She looked down at the ground.

“It was an accident,” Canterlope said. “I’m sorry I got lost! I should’ve stayed with Honeydoo, but I panicked. I missed the bridge and ran into a clearing in the trees. I don’t know why. I was just trying to get away, but then I couldn’t find my way back.”

Topaz looked at Ruby. “It’s exactly like you said. How did you know?”

“Yeah, how did you find me?” Canterlope beamed up at Ruby.

Ruby shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess because I’m young too, I think like you. When I get scared, I do things but don’t always think first. So I imagined what I would’ve done if I’d been scared off from the fire, and it brought us straight to you.”

“Thank you,” Canterlope said.

He shivered and Ruby put her arm around his back. “We need to get you home. You must be freezing. I’m cold and I haven’t been out here nearly as long as you have.”

Canterlope nodded. “Even curled up in the tree was cold. Yes, let’s go.”

“Oh no.” Ruby’s eyes widened. “Which way do we go? I was so worried about finding you, I didn’t think to mark a trail.”

“I didn’t either. I think it’s this way,” Topaz said, shining her light brighter. They headed back the way they had come.

Snow was falling heavily now. It swirled around them, making it difficult for Ruby to see the path. The floor of the forest was becoming coated in white. In the trees, piles of snow were collecting on the branches, then dropping with a loud THWUMP onto the ground.

“It’s getting harder to see,” Topaz said, and Ruby nodded.

Wind had picked up. It whistled around the tree trunks and made the air thick with snow.

“Topaz, your light!” Ruby pointed to where Topaz’s light was shining in front of them. “It looks like a wall.”

Topaz groaned. “My light is reflecting off the snow and ice in the air. Instead of lighting up the path, it’s making it even harder to see.” The topaz gemstone in her chest stopped glowing as the light around her disappeared. “Can you see better without it?”
