Chapter Twenty-Four
When Muga had arrived at her office that Thursday morning, hardly refreshed after a restless night, she called the team together once she had read the overnight reports from the desk sergeant and glanced at Sallyâs arson memo. Constable Graham had sent her some notes in an email with some clips from the surveillance camera, but he had left the office to get some sleep.
âRight then. The town was quiet last night but there was another fire set by the âHomelessâ chap and we still do not have any evidence confirming our drug dealers are also our murderers. Knowing it and proving are two different things. So, we need to focus on checking if we have missed anything. Scott, you, Chu and Chris, I want you three to retrace the route from the humpback bridge into Dorchester to Judo Johnâs gym to see if we have missed any CCTV footage or cameras. In private homes or attached to business premises. Maybe someone has a little camera set up that might have had a glimpse of that Mustang. I know itâs a boring job, but we need much more evidence than we have now. Sally. These fires. Any thoughts?â
âThe banks have employed Tom Flowers to investigate in parallel to us. Lode is checking the village to see if anyone has CCTV. The owners are coming down from London. They had security lights and cameras but there were blind spots and we found a piece of wood outside the house that might have been thrown at the camera closest to the back door. It was bent out of shape but that could have been due to the heat. However, the Fire Chief thought the rear door was the starting point for the fire. And the garage doors were tagged so we know itâs the same guy. Same âhandwritingâ, if you get my drift.â
âWe do. Look, I want you to really focus on this today as it will be
the next thing the Echo gets going on. Youâll have to do it on your own, Iâm afraid.â
âNo problem, guvnor, but, to be honest, Iâm at a bit of a loss as to where to start.â
âAny idea what Tomâs angle is?â
âNope. I could ask him.â
âMight be an idea to team up. Heâs a bloody good detective, almost as good as you.â
Sally took this comment with a pinch of salt. The police seldom teamed up with private eyes, even if they were ex-coppers. But a call to Flowers might not be a bad idea, if only to stop them both duplicating work. Muga opened her arms as if to gather the team closer.
âWe had one small problem yesterday. Our visitor from London decided to go it alone hunting imaginary paedophiles and has ended up putting us all in deep shit. Heâs in a meeting with the Chief Constable as I speak and, if I read the situation right, he will not be coming back to join us. In fact, I think he will be suspended.
