âAre you okay? You seem to be in pain.â
Chris Jones had noticed Callum Lee flinch several times that morning.
âIâm fine, thanks. Just overdid the running last night.â
âOh, I didnât know you ran?â
âA bit. The wifeâs been pushing me to get fit now we have three kiddies. Doesnât want to be left alone if I drop dead with a heart attack.â
It sounded convincing. The real reason for the flinching was his back was in agony from the last whipping. Mrs Fothergill had really let rip and he was now suffering as a result. He had managed to avoid being seen by his wife by the simple act of sleeping on the sofa, telling her the next day he had just fallen asleep watching TV. She had been in bed when he had arrived home the night before, exhausted by the baby, who, for once,
had slept through until seven that morning.
âIf you want to come training with me and the football team, youâre most welcome.â
The thought of stripping off and taking a shower in the changing room in front of his colleagues made Callum shudder. âThanks but Iâm bit private when it comes to that. I like to do things at my own pace. Anyway, how are you getting along with the search warrant for the iPhone and iPad?â
âIâve sent them off to Apple, but they will probably only send back their standard reply that the information is tied to Ramjapâs encryption key and they wonât be able to access it on the cloud because they donât know his code. Unless we go through the Security Services. Do you want that?â
âIâll talk to the Chief Inspector when she gets back. She might be
able to ring that Rory mate of hers and get some help through him.â
He was referring to Commander Rory Taylor of the Diplomatic Protection Unit in London who had been involved when the Russian Ambassador had been blown up leaving Castle School the previous winter.
âWell, Ramjapâs phone company has sent me his call records. The last know location of his phone and iPad was outside his parentsâ house. Someone must have switched them off and taken the sim cards out after breaking into his Golf. He hadnât made many calls recently. None on the day of his death and only four in the week before. He wasnât a very sociable lad, was he?â
âWhat? No texts?â
âNope. Nothing. He had received a few from his sister the day before he died but thatâs it.â
âCan we locate the phone or iPad any other way?â
âNot with their cards removed. Whoever took them is either using them with new cards or has destroyed them or sold them to another user.â
âAnd these files of his?â Callum waved his hand over the stack of papers brought from Ramjapâs bedroom by the forensic boys.
âNothing in them but old clippings from his days with the Echo and the Mail. If he was looking into someone, it must be on his iPad.â
Callum got up, winced as the pain flared across his shoulders and asked, âDo we know where Graham is?â
âHe went to get tea.
