Lunchtime at the school was back to normal. The usual groups in place in the yard, the usual chatter. When the bell rang for them to go back inside, however, something very different happened. Spuds, Billy and Penny came out from behind the wheelie bins and Spuds was staggering a bit. As he came up next to Miss Turvey, he fell against the wall then threw up, an arch of vomit narrowly missing the teacher and the other children but generating a mass of screaming and cries of ‘Uch’. As Miss Turvey bent forward to help him, she smelt his breath and knew at once he had been drinking. Grabbing him by his collar, she pulled him into the boys’ toilets and held his head over one of the sinks as he vomited again.

While her attention was focused on Spuds, she had missed the action going on with Penny. She had also been drinking and was now leaning against the wall of the playground, Bridget by her side.

‘I feel so sick, Bridge. Get me into the loos.’

Bridget started helping her, but she was a big girl now so Finn, who had been watching, took the other arm and between them they got her into the girl’s toilets. Just in time. Head down the lavatory in one of the cubicles, door open, she threw up with great gusto.

+she’s not here. she’s taken Spuds to miss grant’s office+

Penny sat back on her heels and started crying. Bridget asked, ‘Pen, what’s going on?’

‘Spuds ‘ad a bottle of brandy he took from his dad. Made me have some. Well, offered me some and I didn’t want to look a wimp, so I drank some. It was..’ She broke off and threw up again down the bowl.

+Spuds gave her brandy, bro. real brandy+

+miss turvey’s back. hold on. what do i say is wrong with penny?+

+say she’s got the shits and we’re helping her+

+what about the brandy?+

+don’t think there is any left, bro+

‘Patrick Ash. Where’s is your brother?’

‘Penny was taken ill, Miss. Bridget and Finn helped her, Miss.’

‘Ill? What’s wrong with her?’

‘The shits, Miss.’

The other children in the class made farting noises as Miss Turvey blinked then went to see where the three children were.

+get out of the loo. she’s coming. I said Penny had the shits+

‘Bridget, tell Miss Turvey Penny had the shits.’

Finn just managed to get into the corridor before Miss Turvey appeared.

‘Where’s Penny and Bridget?’

He pointed at the door.

‘I haven’t been in, Miss. But I was waiting to help them when they came out.’

‘Right. I’ll deal with this. Go back to the classroom.’

Finn appeared to slip away as Miss Turvey went into the toilets but turned back and held the door open so he could see what happened. Miss Turvey found Penny washing her face with Bridget standing next to her, looking concerned.

‘She’s had the shits, Miss. Must be something she had for lunch, Miss.
