Chapter Twenty

Margery had arrived early to start her cleaning at the Manor and Mike was running through the things that needed doing. ‘There’s a hell of a lot of ironing for you. I haven’t had time to do any this week. They are down to their last white shirt each for school.’

Margery grinned and said, ‘I had noticed. Don’t worry, I’ll stay until it’s all done. Got to change the beds as well. Didn’t have time on Wednesday. You alright after your bit of bother on Wednesday night?’

Mike nodded. ‘Bit of a shock, coming home to find policemen plastered all over the wall but I’m fine. How’s Ian?’

Margery knew Mike knew she was having a relationship with the vicar. No secrets in this house. ‘Lovely as always, dear.’

‘When’s he going to make an honest woman of you, Margery?’

‘Not sure I want him to. Rather fun, sneaking around like kids. At our age, can you imagine?’

Trying not to, Mike went on, ‘Well, I think you both deserve a bit of happiness. Sure you don’t want to live with him?’

‘Well, it would be nice. I miss having someone there all the time, although I don’t miss that miserable bugger I used to be married to. Darwin’s good company but it’s not the same thing. You’d know, You’ve got your Dick. Oh!’

‘Margery Hobbs! Really!’

They both laughed at her unintentional double entendre as Mike went on, ‘By the way, there a guy coming over at one today. A student from Bournemouth. Can you send him over to the studio if he rings the bell?’

‘Something for you, dear?’

She cocked a knowing eyebrow at him, and he grinned.

‘Business, Marge, business.’

The boys had started calling her Marge in honour of Marge Simpson, but Mike seldom used the abbreviation.

‘What’s his name?’

‘His name, believe it or not, is Dax. You won’t be able to miss him, I can assure you of that, Margery.’

She looked at him quizzically. They were standing in the kitchen and she had been filling the washing machine as they were speaking. Closing the door, she stood up and put her hands on her hips.

‘Dax? What sort of a name’s that?’

Grinning at the thought of these two meeting, Mike added, ‘If you think the name’s bad, wait until you see his clothes!’
