In this thatched hut

inside its brushwood fence

traveling, the wind too

passes through

unstaying

shiba kakou

iori no uchi wa

tabi-dachite

sudōru kaze mo

tomarazarikeri

Bereft of any hope

of callers here

yet were it not so lonely

how melancholy life would be

in this mountain hut

tou hito mo

omoi-taetaru

yamazato no

sabishisa nakuba

sumi-ukaramashi

Calling bird

who would you lure

to this mountain hut

though I came here to be

utterly alone?

tare o mata ko wa

yobukodori

hitori nomi koso

suman to omou ni
