WHEN LEAFSONG ENTERED social studies the next day, Reema was fidgeting while she waited for everyone to arrive. When all the class was there, she said, “Since this is the last day of class before break, I’ve organized a surprise field trip to Phaphara. Our two civilizations are deeply rooted in history together. In fact, if it hadn’t been for Phaphara we might have all starved to death. It was the main exporter of food before we found other, more efficient producers.”

The dread was temporarily beaten back as Reema talked. The travel guides marked Phaphara as one of the top tourist locations, loaded in rich history and culture. It would be fascinating.

Summer, as expected, turned around and started talking about the technology, until Usa, who sat close to them, turned around and whispered, “Hey, could you be quiet, please?”

Summer froze mid-sentence, then tried to laugh it off. “Right. Sorry.”

Usa smiled and whispered back, “It’s fine. I should be the one apologizing. It’s just that sometimes accents like the one you have can get really annoying. After a while it just sounds dreggy.”

Leafsong glared at Usa, and Usa shrank back. “Sorry, that came out wrong. It’s usually not annoying. I mean, it’s way better than the skeefer voice, right? That translator sound?” She did a terrible imitation of the sound translators made when they couldn’t fully translate thoughts, and then laughed nervously. “It’s way worse than—”

“Stop talking,” Leafsong snapped.

Usa’s eyes widened. “Hey, I didn’t mean to make you mad, I—”

“Then don’t say anything to us. Ever again, unless you absolutely have to.”

“Leafsong,” said Reema.

Some people in the back of the class snickered, and Leafsong coughed.

Reema cleared her throat. “I will have to address what happened after class. But for now, let’s discuss safety standards.”

“Thanks,” whispered Summer. “Sorry I didn’t say anything.”

“I don’t blame you,” snorted Leafsong.

“Please note,” said Reema, raising her voice as Leafsong snapped to attention again, “that unlike the atmosphere on Yaegor, this atmosphere is highly breathable. It’s mostly made of argon and oxygen, just like Migax. The atmosphere is denser, but the nanobots that filter the air in your lungs should adjust fine. And the seelm have evolved to resist the narcotic effect, so don’t worry about that.” She said the last sentence directly, staring at a group of people joking about the seelm being high. “Even though I trust the nanobots, if any of you feel dizzy, tell me right away, okay? Alright then. Let’s go.”

The class queued up behind her and Reema opened the door. Leafsong swished her tail in anticipation of figuring out what it was Eeksa wanted her to see.

When they stood in front of the Gateways once again, Leafsong shivered, and as the skeefer on duty powered the Gateway she pressed forward, took a deep breath, and flung herself inside.
