Chapter Twenty-Two
Garrett nudged open the door to Logan and Samâs room at the ramshackle motel, careful not to break the thing in two. The wind and brutal rain beat at his back as he limped inside, forcing healing cells to his damn leg to heal the break.
Logan lay on his back on a threadbare yellow bedspread, healing tingles popping the air around him. âWhatever you paid for this dump was too much.â
Sam was on the other bed on his stomach, and he turned his head toward Garrett. âGood news is that itâs clean. Sheets, very old carpet, even older drapesâ¦all laundered.â His green eyes were dark with pain as healing vibrations came from him. His ribs snapped back into place with audible clicks, and he groaned. âEven so, we should burn it down as we leave.â
Logan snorted. âWeâre a month away from these walls falling down. You made some humanâs decade today.â
Garrett eyed the faded green shag carpet and mismatched dresser and bed tables. The place did smell nice, though. Fresh and clean. âHow are you two?â
âNot bad.â Logan sat up. âAm I needed on guard duty?â
âNot for three hours,â Garrett said. His senses were on alert, and his vampire fury calmed as he slid into being a soldier again. âI want to rotate the three of us so two of us are covering Dessie for the night. Sheâs in a hot shower right now.â Heâd helped her in, and the marking on her hip was gone.
Logan nodded. âGot it.â
Garrett popped his ankle back into place and pain ticked up his leg. âI have soldiers posted outside Dessieâs door and bathroom window, and all around the hotel. Iâll take the first shift, Logan, you the second, and Sam the third. Deal?â
Sam rolled over and sat, the burn marks on his arm blistering and then healing. âFine by me.â
Garrettâs phone pinged, and he pressed the speaker button to see the Realmâs computer expert on the other line. âHi, Chalton. What did you find?â
âThe weather really screwed with the satellites we have in the area, but it looks like the missiles originated in the ocean floor. Weâre going to have to scout the destruction to learn more about the projectiles.â The sound of typing came over the line before Chalton continued. âThereâs not enough visibility yet to tell you the status of the island. The last few shots I managed to decipher didnât look good. The entire landmass might be in the ocean now.â
Garrett scrubbed a hand through his damp hair. âWere the missiles somehow triggered by our landing on the island?â He hadnât seen any such sensors, but maybe heâd missed something.
âI donât think so,â Chalton said. âThere wouldâve been some sort of noticeable activity on the island itself that our heat sensors wouldâve caught. The weapons are beyond any human invention, so itâs doubtful humans were involved. The shrouding of the island is dragon technology.â
Garrett stiffened.
Loganâs head snapped up. âYou think the dragons are behind this?â
How did that make any sense?
âDunno,â Chalton said.
