Waterlogged

On Saturday morning, I dragged myself away from my comfortable bed and walked to the Pure Love Club car wash. The car wash had been organized so that they could earn money for the Silver Ring Dance. I was standing away from the action, taking notes for my article. The sun was high in the September sky. I wasn’t sure if it counted as a second summer, as it was still technically before the equinox, but I was grateful for the random splashes of water that came my way, as long as I didn’t end up looking like a contestant in a wet T-shirt contest.

My notes currently said: How does wearing a white tank top while washing cars make these girls proponents of purity and chastity??

I looked down at my own white tank top, embarrassed that I had caved and followed Mel’s dress code. I should have stuck to my guns. I didn’t want anyone to think I was actually part of the PLC. Besides, my boobs were so much bigger than the other girls’, I was terrified of what would happen if one of them aimed their hose the wrong way.

“Ani, would you mind helping out a little? I could really use some more water; this is dirty.” Mel pointed to the hose attached to the stone wall that was the outside the gymnasium.

“I’m not here to be your water boy,” I mumbled to Mel under my breath as I grabbed her tin pail and walked over to the hose. I felt bad for Mel, sure, but I also felt irritated. She didn’t know I knew the truth about her mom’s death, but I didn’t want the truth to change how I felt about her. I still thought the PLC was a joke of a club, and I didn’t like being ordered around. I filled up Mel’s bucket, and the water satisfactorily splashed around as I heaved it toward Mel’s feet, soaking her white tennis shoes in the process.

I bet Lilith never had to help Eve wash cars. She had gotten the hell out before anyone could make her their bitch. I was getting bored, feeling stuck with my thoughts about Lilith and my stepmom, my weird stalker notes, and Nick. I had decided to go to the car wash as a distraction, and it had proven to be anything but. Adele and Joslyn were both washing a huge SUV, and while it was kind of funny watching Joslyn get on her tiptoes to reach the top half of the car, it wasn’t terribly newsworthy. I had no idea what I was doing. There was clearly no story here. Nothing more than a puff piece about a school club.

Then a familiar navy-blue Corolla drove up. With a familiar Nick Lake driving it.

I hadn’t talked to Nick since we’d kissed. Since we’d seen his aunt and my stepmom naked and kissed. I didn’t know what to do. Could I go up to him and kiss him? Would he get out
