“Oh my God, it’s midnight already?! We have to come up with some explanation and call home. They’re already getting up. There’s no chance we’ll get home by the end of the day over there.” Val walked from one bedroom door to the other as if she couldn’t decide which one to enter.

“Sit down and have some coffee. You need to calm down first and then we can figure it all out,” said Laura and placed a pot of hot Java on the table. The strong aroma filled the room, but it only made Val sick. She was so tense that no action, other than entering her own house, could have relaxed her. She needed to come up with a story that Alex would believe. She took a cup from Laura without even thinking about it, took a sip, and had to admit that feeling the warm liquid washing her stomach had a sort of positive effect. She sat down and saw Hannah, who was staring at her palms folded in her lap.

“Do you want a cup?” Laura asked her, but Hannah didn’t respond.

“Hannah?” said Val.

“What?” the petite blond answered, looking startled, as if she had just realized where she was.

“Do you want a cup?” Valerie lifted her coffee to put an image to her question.

“Oh, yes. Yes, thank you,” Hannah said and lowered her eyes back to her hands.

Valerie put down her cup. However soothing the brew was, she couldn’t drink it. It would only agitate her further. She looked at her friends, both sitting quietly. The whole room filled with coffee aroma and tension. Outside in the hallway someone got off the elevator, singing. Val wished she could swap places with the carefree person.

“Maybe we can call and tell them we got into a car accident,” suggested Laura.

“Are you out of your mind? Do you want to scare them? Alex would jump into his car and come looking for me. And how would we damage the car?” Val snapped. She was surprised how quickly she managed to analyze the suggested lie. The years of deception were paying off.

“Well, the only person out of their mind is you! Maybe you need to chill! I’m not the one who has a problem here, anyway. I could just text Robert that I’m coming a day later. He doesn’t give a shit anyway.” Laura’s voice broke and tears pooled around her eyes.

“I’m sorry,” said Val as she started to walk around again. “You don’t have any suggestions?” She turned to Hannah.

“Maybe it’s time to tell the truth finally,” said Hannah, her voice hoarse. She kept staring at her hands.

“Wow, now that’s a fine idea! I’m just going to unload years of lies over the phone,” yelled Valerie. “I could just confess to the murder. The effect would be the same.”

“Food poisoning?” Laura suggested, and Val stopped walking and looked at her. Finally, something! Val almost smiled.

“We ate dinner together and fell sick. We spent the night throwing up. We feel much better, but we need to sleep before we drive, just to be safe.
