The place we were told to make headquarters of the Brigade turned out to be one of the worst in the Valley and was fairly swept with shrapnel and we had no time to dig ourselves in properly and two of our headquarters men hit but not killed. I decided to move, so we did so at 4 o’clock in the morning when there was a lull in the fighting.

The rifle fire never ceases and at night it is like a heavy hailstorm on an iron roof. But it is not doing much damage as it is all at the trenches and chiefly, the Turks fire as they are frightened we will rush them, so they stick their rifles up over the trench and fire wildly – and as there are about 45,000 of them, you can imagine the row. You have to shout to one another sometimes to make yourself heard.
