Chapter Five

As Hailey headed back to the office, she couldn’t keep the smile off her face. Having lunch with Gage had been great. He had asked her to walk him to his truck and when she did, he pulled her close and kissed her. She loved how he kissed, no matter what way he did it. Either those quick little pecks, the sipping at her lips, or those hard, deep kisses. The man knew what do with his lips. She shivered and it had nothing to do with the cold. She couldn’t quit thinking about him going over her body and kissing all of her. All of her. Damn, he was fine. Great in bed, and a gentleman out of it.

Oh, Lord. This was not going to go well. Someone was going to end up with a broken heart and she had a feeling it was going to be her. He was going to be so easy to fall for, and if she were honest with herself, she was already at the edge of the cliff. She spun around when she heard her name and smiled when she saw her brother striding to her.

“Hey, Noah.” She hugged him when he reached her.

“Did you enjoy your lunch?”

“Yes. How did you know I was at lunch?”

“Why else would you be out of the office this time of the day?” A frown marred his brow.

“Oh, yeah.” She nervously laughed.

“What’s going on with you and Gage Beckett?”

She gasped. “If you knew I had lunch with him, why didn’t you just say so?”

His lips quirked as if to fight back a grin as he looked at her.

“I didn’t know until just now, but I know you had dinner with him Saturday night.”

“Do you have spies, Noah? I’m a grown woman, I can see who I want.”

“Calm down. No, I don’t have spies, you know better than that, and I know you’re a grown woman. Someone saw you Saturday night and mentioned it to me. I just don’t want to see you hurt again. I already told Gage I’d kick his ass if he hurt you.”

She punched his arm, which was like hitting a brick wall.

“Damn you, Noah. Tell me you’re kidding.”

Noah folded his arms and shook his head. “Nope.”

“Oh, my God! Should I go to a woman you’re seeing and tell her I’d kick her ass if she hurt you?” She could feel her temper rising. She loved her big brother and loved that he felt the need to protect her, but this was ridiculous.

“It’s different with big brothers. No one hurts our little sisters. Remember Sam with Riley? He punched him when he hurt Katie.”

“You will not punch Gage. I can take care of myself.”

“Really? You let that dick Tony hurt you.” At her gasp, he winced. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. It’s just that I know how bad he hurt you and you wouldn’t let me kick his ass. Hell, I still might.”

“Noah, I can’t go through life not expecting to be hurt.
