Old and young ladies whispered together at the dance downstairs. They discussed the dresses and jewels in great detail, gossiped about romantic attachments, and predicted engagements. In the most beautiful gown of the evening, ordered from B ahia, Malvina was the subject of lively and mal icious comment. By now everyone in town knew that the engineer was a married man. To be sure, his wife was incurably insane and confined to a hospital, but that did not alter the case : he had no right to look at a single, marriageable girl. What had he to offer her except dishonor? At the very least he would cause her to be gossiped about and would kill her chances of ever getting married. They were inseparable and danced every dance together : they did not miss a waltz, polka, or fox trot. Romulo danced the Argentine tango even better than the deceased Osmundo. Malvina, her face flushed, seemed wrapped in a dream as she floated lightly in the engineer's athletic arms. A steady stream of whispers ran through the row of chairs along the wall , up the staircase, and through the upstairs rooms. Dona Felicia, the mother of the ardent Iracema of front-gate rendezvous, forbade her daughter to be seen with Malvina.
