“Danke Himmel!” he said fervently. “X-9 will be glad of that.”

“Gewiss,” agreed the Oberst. “X-9 will be very pleased. And that reminds me, Excellenz, I have often wondered who X-9 really is. He is at the head of this Juggernaut faith.”

“That is only for me and the Kaiser to know,” General von Machler snapped.

“Ja,” Franklein said quickly, “but one cannot help but be curious about such a thing.”

The general and the Oberst hastened once more to the side of the great canvas to watch those two diving planes. They saw them come snarling down over the canvas that looked like forest and on toward the south. They could tell from where they stood that the two Spads were hurling at the captive balloon that was now being quickly hauled in.
