“That’s right, sergeant,” he said. “Keep him working hard. It will do him good to have some of that cognac sweated out of his system.”

The hauptmann passed on. When he had gone from view around the end of the barracks, the sergeant spoke softly:

“What was this you said you heard last night when they were bringing you in?”

G-8 glanced in the direction that the hauptmann had gone and leaned on his shovel handle again.

“I don’t know that I can remember all of it clearly. It was something about the importance of winning this drive which is to come shortly near Essengar. I was riding in a sidecar, I think.”
