Chapter 10: “Stop that Spy!”

“HEY, you big stooped ox,” Nippy chirped, “who do you think you are, giving orders to a guy that’s carrying important papers from one general to another?”

With that the terrier ace came closer to Bull. And in the darkness the Falcon thought he saw Nippy nudge the big fellow in the ribs.

“Lay off and let him go,” Nippy argued. “If the general wants to put the drive through he’ll do it and if he doesn’t want to that’s his business too. The chief’ll know what to do.”

The German spy tensed in his cockpit. No use arguing with these men when one of them was already on his side. He saw the big fellow weakening.

“Come on,” Nippy was saying pulling Bull away from the cockpit. “Let go of that throttle before I paste you one. Let the guy go. He’s got trouble enough flying through this snow without arguing with a dummy like you.”

With that Bull Martin turned on his little pal playfully. And the Falcon laughed — laughed easily because his hand reached the throttle and pushed it open wide.

As the Liberty blasted he kicked the tail around and headed into the wind. A cloud of snow covered Nippy and Bull and the laughing voice of the Falcon called out to them at the top of his lungs.

“Cheerio. Be seeing you.”

Then the D.H. was flashing over the field, gaining speed. Rising into the blowing snow.

The Falcon took a long breath to quiet his frayed nerves.

“Phew!” he whistled, “that was a close one. Ach, if it had not been for that little one, for Nippy Weston, that big fellow might have caused me trouble — and it would not do to have to shoot him to get him out of the way because that would at once turn suspicion upon me.”

The Falcon glanced at the compass now. It was staying true and pointing out the course toward Paris and Le Bourget field. The tank gauge said FULL. That was good.

While the Falcon droned on across the Allied country of snow he tried to figure things out with certainty. There was definitely something up over there beyond the mountains or G-8 and his two assistants would not be there.

The German spy tried to work out a plan whereby he could lay a trap for that famous G-8 person. If he could do that it would be the greatest feat of his career.

Now he was roaring over the rear country far behind the lines on his way toward Paris. Again and again he saw the lights of hamlets far below. The wind in that section wasn’t blowing so hard. And the air, even close to the ground was free from snow.

And again he would see lights far ahead that went out when he came near enough so that those on the ground could hear the drone of his motor. He smiled as those things happened. Little did those people down there think that a famous German spy was flying this Allied plane.
