From the sound of labored breathing, and now and then a strained grunt from this mysterious being that had rescued him from the Swamp, G-8 guessed that he was being either carried or dragged along the treacherous trail. He could still think clearly and hear normally and he was certain that but for the pitch-darkness about him he would have been able to see.

His brain was spinning like a top. He tried to think straight. To figure things out from a sane angle. But somehow there seemed no sanity in anything that had taken place during the last two or three minutes.

Histories had told him that no one had ever successfully found the trail and reached the island in the middle of the Swamp. Again he heard that low insane chuckle. It seemed to express a wild, childish delight in satisfying the lust of a tortured mind. He heard the soft padding of the feet. Bare feet, they sounded like. They were off the trail G-8 decided.

He suddenly found that he could see. They must be crossing the clearing on the island. The light was very dim. He made out stars above him.

Slowly a strange prickling sensation began at his neck where he first felt numb. At a much slower speed than the paralysis had overcome him, the feel of pin-pricks ran down his body to his feet and his arms to his fingertips. Very dimly he sensed his feet bumping.

He was being dragged face upward with the hand of the lunatic clutching the back of his collar.

He tried to move his legs but although he was still powerless in that respect he was certain that the weird paralysis was leaving him. He heard the padding of the feet on the cleared ground increase in speed. Doubtless the other also realized that before long his powers would all be back and he was hurrying to reach his destination before that could take place.

Each second the prickly sensation became more apparent. Very cautiously he tried to turn his head. At the same time he felt the arm of the hand that clutched his collar against the back of his head. Yes, his feelings were returning.

He managed to turn his head enough so that out of the corner of his eye he could get a glimpse of his strange rescuer. It was only a glimpse at best, for at the same time that his eyes caught that grotesque figure they plunged from the cleared place in the center of the island into a jungle of tangled branches. But what he saw brought cold sweat out on his forehead and sent his brain into another flat spin.

The figure was that of a bent, warped being that crouched half over and walked in a gruesome sidewise fashion like a great ape that had been deformed by some hideous accident. It was merely a shadowy, grotesque thing. He couldn’t seem to locate the place where the head was fastened until that mad laugh came again.
