Chapter 15
After an X-ray and thorough examination by the orthopedist at Ardor Creek Medical Center, it was confirmed that Heatherâs ankle was sprained. The doctor prescribed an ice press, ankle brace and lots of ibuprofen. Thankful it wasnât worse, she allowed the doctor to wrap her ankle as she sat atop the exam table. When he was finished, he directed her to wait for the nurse who would bring her some crutches.
Jeremy entered as the doctor exited and observed her wrapped ankle. âHowâs it feeling?â
âEh, Iâve had worse,â she said, shrugging atop the exam table. âIs Angeline on the way to Scranton?â
He nodded and sat beside her. âJen is on her way too. Angeline will be in surgery at the orthopedic hospital to repair her leg and thereâs no reason for us both to sit in a waiting room. Iâll head to Scranton once I have you home and settled in. Jus and Gary are going to keep Gabby tonight.â
âYou should go to Scranton now, Jeremy. Iâm fine.â
He nudged her with his shoulder. âYou really not a fan of being taken care of, huh?â
âHonestly, I donât really know. I donât think anyoneâs ever offered.â
Brushing a lock of hair from her forehead, he tucked it behind her ear. âYouâve got someone in the bunker with you now, Heather. Whether you like it or not.â
She squinted one eye. âIâm not sure if I like it. It makes me uncomfortable, thatâs for damn sure.â
Chuckling, he slid his hand over hers and squeezed. âGood. I want you on your toes.â
âIâm not sure how I feel about that coming from an author who writes about serial killers,â she teased. âShould I be worried?â
He gave her a goofy grin before the nurse walked in with her crutches. Heather stuffed them under her arms, ready to get home and put the harrowing day behind her.
Jeremy drove them home, holding her hand the entire time, fingers laced atop her thigh. Once they arrived, he jogged around and helped her out before crouching down and lifting her.
âThis is ridiculous,â she said, feigning annoyance although there was something primal and sexy about him carrying her. âI have crutches, Jeremy.â
He shushed her and trailed to the door, opening it and carrying her upstairs before placing her on the bed. âIâm going to go down and get your crutches and fanny pack, and Iâll be right back.â
After he retreated, she stood on her good leg and tried to remove her yoga pants, although she didnât make much progress. He returned, setting her crutches and pack in the corner before rushing over. âLet me help you.â
Sighing, she collapsed on the bed. âI didnât imagine this scenario would be the first time you took off my pants in my bed, but thanks.â
His lips twitched as he helped her remove her pants. Glancing at her legs, he trailed his fingers over them. âDo you want to take a bath? Youâve got dirt everywhere. I can help you.â
âI bet you can,â she said, arching a brow.
âAnd you accuse me of being cheesy,â he muttered.
