Exceed has begun a trial using 3D-printed prostheses in Cambodia in partnership with Nia Technologies, a nonprofit Canadian organization. Using 3D printing will not replace the need for skilled professionals, but it could increase the efficiency of the professionals who are available by making it faster and easier to produce prostheses. In addition to Asia, Nia is carrying out trials of its 3D printing technology in Tanzania and Uganda, in Africa, areas where prosthetists are scarce. Orthopedic technician Moses Kaweesa of the CoRSU hospital in Kisubi, Uganda, which is trying out the technology, says that it reduces the time to make a prosthesis from five days to barely two, and that it uses less material-thus reducing costs, which is important in a poor country.
