Finding a Partner
As we stated at the beginning of this chapter, the seventh truth is that you can't go it alone. While having mentors to guide you will hasten your journey to success, having a partner to share the burden with is indispensable. All of the aforementioned techniques for securing a mentor also work for finding a business partner. Building anything new is an arduous task, so having someone to share the load with you is preferable to going it alone. When you are in it together, you can keep each other's spirits high. You'll find that you have more tenacity when you don't want to let your partner down.
Find a partner with complementary skills to yours. We all have blind spots, and finding someone with the skillsets to complement yours makes you both unstoppable. Steve Wozniak, perhaps the foremost coder in the world at the time, couldn't sell water in the desert; but partnered with Steve Jobs's business savvy, they changed the world. Bill Gates couldn't have created Microsoft without Paul Allen. Google required the genius of both Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Would you be able to fly around the world if Orville Wright didn't have his brother, Wilbur, by his side? How different would banking be if Henry Wells hadn't partnered with William Fargo? How would you ever get 99 44/100% pure Ivory Soap clean if brothersâinâlaw William Procter and James Gamble hadn't partnered? And, would you have ever tasted the rich creamy goodness of Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream if Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield hadn't opened their first ice cream shop in 1977? âWe measured our success not just by how much money we made,â Jerry recalled, âbut by how much we contributed to the community. It was a twoâpart bottom line.â10
