Chapter Eight

The second time she woke up not knowing where she was proved a touch better than the first. Jessie blinked at the vividly white ceiling above her and let her aching body enjoy the soft mattress beneath her. Unfettered and smelling clean, she briefly wondered where she lay until she noticed the familiar emblem carved into the post of the bed. Her father’s house—more like mansion—although not the room she grew up in, probably because in a fit of rage at her refusal to toe the line, her dear old dad had it remade into a theater room. Jessie thought the dark room was a marked improvement over the sterile white of most of the other spaces in the house. Her dad seriously lacked imagination when it came to décor.

Location solved, she allowed herself to think back on the last moment she recalled. Not fun because it involved pain, lots of it, and a really pissed off brown bear. Forget Yogi. Mason in his shifted form was the type of bear park rangers warned campers to stay away from. Jessie, however, wouldn’t have minded getting closer because the whole rabid bear act came about because of the danger she found herself in. A danger Mason obviously wanted to protect her from. How cute. How wrong. How confusing.

But she’d think on her emotions for the bear—and his fabulous love making—later. As she recalled, that hyena in need of a neck adjustment—broken being preferred—had stuck her with a needle, which contained some deadly serum, or so he implied. Worried, she sat up in the bed and checked herself over. Arms, legs, hands, feet, all seemed normal. Her skin color appeared the same. Her face? She popped off the bed, the white nightie someone placed on her reaching only mid-thigh, and hunted for a mirror, which she found in the ensuite bathroom. Peering at herself anxiously in the reflective surface, she sighed when she didn’t see any signs of a third eye, or bulges indicating tumors, or extra limbs trying to grow.

It seemed whatever the hyena intended to dose her with was either needed in greater concentrations or a dud. Either way, other than a little soreness in her muscles, she felt fine.

What about Mason though? She wondered how he’d healed from his injuries. Even in the mess surrounding them, she’d not missed the burns on his body as he slammed the cage trying to escape in a crazy effort to rescue her. She needed to find him.

Not because her heart hammered in her chest with worry. Not because her body tingled in anticipation for more of his touch. And certainly not because she liked him. No way. Uh-uh. She went looking for him to make sure he got the care he deserved. Nothing else. Liar.

She’d bitch slap herself later for the deceit. Right now, she owned a burning need to know his fate.

Forget making it out the door, though. It swung open before she reached it and her father stalked in with a foul look on his face—not to be mistaken with fowl, which was how he looked when shifted.
