TWENTY-THREE

Jason stared at the metal door, the professor’s words still lingering. “We need more time with him,” Jason said, yanking his arm free of the Russian and stepping toward the closed cell.

The agent jammed the bolt shut, then clicked the other lock into place.

“We need to get back in there,” Jason added, raising his voice.

The hard man turned to face Jason, his features hard and unaffected. “Your time is up,” he said, motioning them to move down the hall.

Jason didn’t budge. “We need more of it.”

“Too bad. This way.”

“Do you have any idea what’s happening? What’s at stake right now? We need to—”

The imposing man hovered his hand over his waist, his pistol, baton, and handcuffs conveniently lined up and ready to be utilized at a moment’s notice. “You were granted thirty minutes. That time has elapsed.” He grabbed Jason by the arm and squeezed tight again. Jason would’ve broken his arm and snatched the keys if they weren’t surrounded by armed personnel.

They made it back five levels up and weaved out to the main door. Jason and Royal shot each other looks as they adjusted their coats and put on their gloves and hats.

Before sliding the thick fabric of the glove over his left forearm, Jason focused on the timer counting down. Fourteen hours remained, and Jason felt like they were no closer to figuring out who was really behind the attacks.

The towering outer door groaned and slid aside. A blinding white world came into view, swirls of snow howling inside. They stepped out, their boots thumping along the concrete to where their ride was still resting on the helipad. The sun was now about sixty degrees above the southwestern horizon, yet another reminder that time was passing by. The world—and everything in it—was continuing to move along, ticking their time away.

Inside the helicopter, the Russian higher-up said nothing as he faced forward in the seat in front of them. Jason had the left rear seat, facing out through the back left side window, and the two soldiers sat alongside he and Royal.

The pilots fired up the engines, gave them a little time to warm up, then pushed the rotors and took off shakily into the air. They cruised up to a thousand feet and soared east. Jason looked back as the visible portion of the
